Shanklin Sandown rowing club continued their excellent start to the season with some notable performances in difficult conditions at the Southampton spring head.
The men’s crew of John Langborne, Ben Smith, Arlo Adds & Ollie Hatch went one better than their previous event at Christchurch by winning the novice category by the tightest of margins, with just one second separating the top two crews.
The girls J16 quad of Alannah Denness, Layla Katirewa, Beth Katirewa & Esme Walters secured their second successive head race victory, posting an excellent time over the 5k course for such a young crew, and there was a successive race victory for Kayleigh Batchelor and Yas Wright in the coastal pair, with Batchelor also taking the win in the women’s open sculls event.
Rachael Debenham completed an excellent day for Shanklin by winning the novice ladies sculls event in her first outing of the season, with clubmate Yas Wright second.
Carter Horrix and Louis Sheasby, despite being the only entry in the J14 double sculls category, still produced an excellent time to finish well up the overall order, beating more established crews in the process.
The novice ladies crew of Fauve Morgan, Damia Robert, Roxy Browne & Frances Katirewa also produced another solid performance and coped well with the varying conditions.
The club return to Southampton for the coastal fours head next weekend.
