Following winning four medals at the Ball Cup South regatta at Dorney Lake on 8th May, Shanklin Sandown rowing club continued their winning form and enjoyed a great start at the first Hants & Dorset regatta of the season at Milford on Sea, securing five wins and three runners up spots.
The club’s Junior crews won all three of the J16 events, with the girl’s quad of Alannah Denness, Layla Katirewa, Beth Katirewa, Esme Walters & Daisy Faithfull (Cox) winning their fourth event in a row. The crew led from the start and held off a late charge from Poole to win by a length.
The boy’s four of Arlo Adds, Ben Smith, Ollie Hatch, Fred Giemza-Pipe & Jane Denby- Roach (Cox) also secured victory by a length in one of the closest races of the day. The crew put in a late push to break free of their nearest challengers and take a fine win. The Boy’s quad of Hatch, Giemza-Pipe, Carter Horrix, Louis Sheasby & Smith (Cox) also led from the start, dominating the race.
The Ladies Senior pair’s event saw Daisy and Emily Faithfull, 2019 H&D champions, returning to fine form and, in a controlled race, the pair secured a three-length win over BTC. In the Ladies Junior pairs race, Kayleigh Batchelor and Yas Wright took the top spot by the same margin, this after the race was restarted.
The club also secured strong second place finishes in the Ladies novice sculls for Wright, the Junior sculls for Emily Faithfull and in the Senior sculls for Daisy Faithfull with Batchelor third in the same event.
The Novice men’s crew came fourth in their final with the Ladies just missing out on a final spot finishing fourth in their heat, with both crews experiencing side by side racing for the first time.
Back into training for the Island regattas, the club will next race at Shanklin and Ryde over the Bank Holiday weekend in June.
