Shanklin Sandown enjoyed a successful start to the new Hants & Dorset season when the club travelled to Christchurch for the Head of the Stour on Sunday.
The club claimed three victories in the time trial event run over the two-mile course in Christchurch Harbour. The girls J16 quad of Alannah Denness, Layla Katirewa, Beth Katirewa & Esme Walters had a convincing win of over three minutes as did Carter Horrix and Louis Sheasby in the J14 double scull, who were the second fastest double of the day. The third success came in the ladies’ coastal pair for Kayleigh Batchelor & Yas Wright, boding well for the season ahead.
The new men’s novice line up of John Langbourne, Ben Smith, Arlo Adds & Ollie Hatch also took the runners up spot, a superb achievement in only their second outing together in this line up, and there were also runner up spots for both Batchelor and Wright in their respective sculling races.
The novice ladies crew of Fauve Morgan, Damia Robert, Roxy Browne, and Frances Katirewa coped well in the conditions to secure a podium spot and there was also a third-place finish for both Ben Smith in the coastal novice and Denness & Walters in the J16 double scull events.
The club now prepares for the challenge of the longer, winding course of the Itchen river for the Southampton Spring Head next weekend.
