Shanklin Sandown Rowing club secured four wins at last weekend’s BTC Spring Head Race. The Novice Ladies crew of Yasmin Wright, Lottie Tapsell, Mia Phelan, Sophie Atkin & Lesley Walters (Cox) had a commanding victory over the 5k course winning by over a minute as did the J16 double scull of Ethan Walters & Riley Horrix, both of whom are on the IW Council Talented Athlete Programme. Not only did the boys win their race in style, but also produced the fastest time of the day for a double scull over all age categories. The club’s third win of the day came with the crew of Owen Denness, Andrew Tapsell, Horrix, Walters and Emily Faithfull (cox) who took the plaudits in the men’s novice four river category. A new coastal doubles partnership of Kayleigh Batchelor and Emily Faithfull stormed the open women’s event by over two minutes this after Batchelor had secured the J14 single sculls position in a row off earlier in the day for the right to represent the Wessex region at the Junior Inter Regional Regatta in April. The girl’s J16 river quad of Scarlett Phelan, Mia Phelan, Rachael Debenham, Yasmin Wright & Emily Oatley (Cox) finished second, whilst the club had a new Novice coastal four line up of Kevin Faithfull, Thomas Ashley, Alfie Downey, Andrew Tapsell & Garry Walters (Cox) , who produced a bold performance in their first outing over this distance to come home in seventh.
Lottie Tapsell also made her head race debut in a coastal scull putting in an encouraging performance to finish second.
Also a thank you to Ryde and Newport rowing clubs for helping us with the transfer of boats🚣🏽♀️
