It is with great sadness that we announce the death of one of our long standing members, John Forrest on Thursday 7th January 2021, aged 77. John had been battling cancer throughout 2020 and was holding his own against the disease but sadly died unexpectedly at home.
John joined Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club in 1971 and became a keen oarsman, competing in fours, galleys and pairs for several years. He took part in the first Isle of Wight Hants & Dorset Regatta held by Ryde and Shanklin at Yaverland. He also was a member of the crew that rowed around the Island in 1974. He helped build the club house that was opened in 1975 and was then instrumental with the organising of the building and opening of the new boathouse in 2014. It was at the Rowing club that he met Julie, and they were Mens and Ladies Captains together in 1977. After bringing up his two children Michael and Eleanor, John again took on positions in the club and became Captain in the early 2000s and served on the committee until his death. He ran the Bar, was secretary for the 150 club, served on the IOW Rowing Forum, was the “go to” person for boat maintenance, club maintenance, and generally any job that needed doing! Always willing to get any new member afloat, and encourage them, his stamina helping out on the beach and at regattas until well into his 70s was amazing. Our heartfelt condolences are sent to Julie, Michael and Eleanor. John will be greatly missed by all members of the club both young and old, and his knowledge and work leave a huge void. Rest in Peace John, and thank you.
