Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club (Sponsored by Advanced Automotive) had their 18 cadets all aged between 13 and 18 years old entered into 9 events at Ryde on Saturday 7th June.

The Men’s Junior Four 'A' crew of Joe Robertson, Matt Miselbach, Harry Hopper, Harry Miselbach (stroke) and Alex Robertson (cox) rowed well in their heat and qualified for the Finals with ease. In the final the crew rowed well, battling against very rough seas in an outside lane but were unable to keep up with the majority and finished in 5th place.

The Men’s Novice Four 'A' crew of Jamie Gamble, Henry Gove, Tom Leaver, Jaimey Wain (Stroke) and John Forrest (cox) were placed in the Final and after an excellent row in the conditions took 3rd place.

The Men’s Novice Four 'B' crew of Jan Wrede, Stefan Drews (Jan and Stefan both German exchange students that we have taught to row), Andrew Swallow, Lewis Jenkins (Stroke) and James Thompson (cox) had their first ever race. They did extremely well to cope with the very rough conditions and having to use a heavy cox at the last minute and although coming in last place, were not far off the leading crews.

The Ladies Novice Four ‘A’ crew of Juliette Wrixon, Hannah Cusworth, Amber De Landro, Rebecca Nigh (Stroke) and Jaimey Wain (cox) also rowed in the final. Due to a poor line at the start they were left behind and struggled to make any ground on the leading 2 crews. After the buoy turn on the return leg they managed to hold off the other crews and crossed the line in 3rd place.

Alex Robertson & Joe Murray competed in the Senior pairs Final; their first coastal race in this top status since winning the Junior championship last season. They did very well against much more experienced crews and although finishing in 4th place were not far behind the winners.

Alex Robertson also competed in the Senior Sculls Final later in the day competing against very experienced Senior scullers and didn’t manage to make a podium finish coming in at 6th place.

The fortunes changed in the Men’s Novice sculls final where Shanklin sculler Harry Miselbach took charge of the race right from the start and despite extremely rough conditions managed to win the race with a huge lead on his nearest competitor. Harry now needs just one more win to move up to Junior status.
