Congratulations to Riley Horrix who won Silver in the Boys J14 Omnium event at
the British Junior Championships at Holme Pierrepoint in Nottingham.
The Omnium tests all aspects of rowing a single scull, including standing up and
turning round in the boat, a slalom course, a 500 metre race, and turning the boat
correctly. Ethan Walters was unlucky after a controversial judging decision
not to join Riley on the podium and was placed sixth but actually posted the fastest
slalom time of all competitors, and Riley was the quickest in the 500 metre sprint. They then teamed up, competing in the same omnium event, this time in the double, and despite the crew completing all the disciplines and posting the fastest slalom and 500m times they finished in fifth spot.
Rachael Debenham also competed in the omnium event for the first time and finished inside
the top 80. Ethan and Riley, also supported by the IOW Talent Development programme then competed in the J15 double, finishing second in the D final, a fantastic achievement placing them in the top 20 for J15 doubles, whilst still a year underage, which bodes well for next season.
The J16 girls crew of Lottie Tapsell & Sophie Atkin won their D final in fine style, whilst the J15 combination of Tapsell & Debenham just missed out on qualifying for the finals.
