Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club were in top winning form again last Saturday, travelling to Surrey for Burway Small Boats Head. The club claimed three wins and four runner up spots in a packed day of racing across three divisions, this represented the club’s most successful inland event to date.

Ethan Walters & Riley Horrix, part of the Isle of Wight talented athletes’ programme, recorded another convincing win in the double scull, with a winning margin of a minute. This also placed them 21st overall out of 375 crews, a remarkable achievement from this young crew. Ethan Walters also won the single sculls event, setting a blistering pace, with Riley finishing a close second.

Kayleigh Batchelor, aged just 13, impressed many in the J14 single sculls event , her first head race in a single, which she won in fine style. She also took runners up spot in the double with Scarlett Phelan. Emily Faithfull also enjoyed an excellent scull in the J17 single for the first time this season, securing the club a third runners up position, as did Yasmin Wright and Lottie Tapsell finishing just ahead of club mates Mia Phelan and Rachael Debenham in the WJ6 2x.

Single sculling debutants Owen Denness and Lottie Tapsell finished a creditable fifth and sixth respectively, whilst Sophie Atkin in only her second race in J17 1x showed improving speed and form, to secure fifth place.
