Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club took several crews to the iconic venue of Henley last weekend for the Henley Small Boats Head. Facing top competition from around the country, the club enjoyed some excellent results.
Ethan Walters & Riley Horrix, part of the IW Council Talented athlete’s programme, recorded an emphatic victory in the J15 Doubles event, with a winning margin of over 30 seconds for the 3km course. A superb result considering they were fresh from having secured third and fourth place respectively in the singles event earlier that day.
The club’s women’s junior development squad also put in some encouraging performances, with some experiencing this type of event for the first time. Rachael Debenham and Scarlett Phelan finished just outside the top ten in the Girls J15 doubles, whilst Sophie Atkin gained valuable experience as well beating several crews rowing in a higher age category, both in the single and the double, the latter with partner Mia Phelan. Lottie Tapsell and Yasmin Wright also sculled well in the J15 Double, making their debut at a river Head race. This serves as great preparation for Shanklin’s next race at Burway next month.
